What LOGINventory is, and what it isn’t.
What is LOGINventory?
Software for network inventory, software asset management, and IT documentation. Discovers hardware, software, and configurations on the network. No software installation on the target devices. Vendor: Schmidt’s LOGIN GmbH from Munich, on the market since 2002. Over 13,000 users currently rely on LOGINventory.
What does “agentless discovery” mean?
LOGINventory scans devices directly from the network via WMI/RPC, SNMP, or SSH. Without having to install software on the target devices beforehand. The scan account only needs local admin rights on the Windows target systems.
For devices outside the LAN (for example home offices), the Offline Agent is available for Windows, Linux, and macOS. Software usage measurement runs through the optional LOGINuse Agent. So “agentless” applies to the core inventory within the LAN. Not an absolute claim for every scenario.
Which devices and operating systems are discovered?
- Windows: XP SP3 through Server 2025 (all editions except Home)
- Linux/Unix: SSH + Perl 5.8 or later
- macOS: 10.15 Catalina or later
- Network devices: SNMP v1/v2c/v3
- Virtualization: VMware ESXi/vCenter v5 or later, XenServer 4 or later
- Exchange: 2010–2025 SE, Active Directory, mobile devices via Exchange ActiveSync
- Cloud: Azure VMs, AWS VMs, Microsoft 365 subscriptions
Peripherals without network capability (monitors, headsets, etc.) can be added manually. Not discoverable via the network: Windows Home editions, unmanaged switches, and comparable consumer devices.
How many values are read per asset?
By default, up to 1,117 individual values per Windows device. The .inv file for a typical PC is around 40 KB.
Is LOGINventory a cloud solution?
No. LOGINventory runs entirely on your own infrastructure (on-premises). Inventory data stays in your local SQL database; nothing is transmitted to LOGIN. The one exception: the AI assistant LIA uses Azure OpenAI. The service is optional and can be disabled at any time.
How is LOGINventory different from other inventory tools?
Three factual differences: no cloud requirement (data stays on your infrastructure), a per-asset pricing model with volume discounts instead of a flat fee, and a version that’s free forever for up to 20 devices with no time limit.
What costs what?
What’s the difference between the Inventory Edition and the SAM Edition?
The Inventory Edition covers network inventory and IT documentation. The SAM Edition includes everything in the Inventory Edition and adds license management: target vs. actual comparison, compliance reports, and software usage measurement. An upgrade from Inventory to SAM is available through a separate upgrade SKU.
What does LOGINventory cost?
LOGINventory is billed per asset with tiered pricing. The subscription (LOGINventory360) starts at €3.70 per asset/year for the Inventory Edition and at €4.70 per asset/year for the SAM Edition, depending on asset count.
Details and an interactive pricing calculator are on /en/pricing/.
Are there multi-year contracts or special terms?
For terms on longer durations or larger asset counts from 10,000 up, talk directly to sales: support@loginventory.de.
How does the service provider license work?
The SP license is aimed at system integrators and IT service providers who manage multiple end customers. It’s offered as a subscription with a 3- or 12-month term and is available in the Inventory and SAM editions, with Periphery as an add-on. Each end-customer tenant needs its own LOGINventory license.
More details: Solutions for MSPs.
Is the multi-tenant module licensed separately?
Yes. The multi-tenant module (Multi-Tenant) is a paid add-on (SKU LI-MT). Competence Partners get it at no extra cost. Every tenant needs its own LOGINventory license.
What needs to run in your environment?
What are the system requirements for the LOGINventory server?
Operating system: Windows 10/11 (x64) or Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022, 2025.
Hardware (recommended): 4+ logical processors, 8 GB RAM, SSD. Minimum: 4 processors, 4 GB RAM, 10 GB of free storage.
Software: .NET Framework 4.8, Visual C++ Redistributable 2015–2022 (x64), PowerShell 4.0 or later.
Which database is required?
The setup includes SQL Server 2025 Express. Sufficient for environments up to roughly 1,000 assets (Express’s 10 GB database limit applies). The minimum is SQL Server 2012 SP4; for larger environments and better topology performance, SQL Server 2016 or later is recommended.
The “Ready to Use” download with the Express database is around 2.1 GB; the download without a database is around 720 MB.
How long does installation take?
The basic installation is complete in about 5 minutes.
Does LOGINventory have to run on a dedicated server?
No. LOGINventory can be installed on a Windows client or server. For production use, we recommend a Windows Server, often as a virtual machine. The database can run locally or on a separate SQL Server.
Which ports need to be open for scans?
| Use | Ports |
|---|---|
| Windows Remote Scan | ICMP, TCP 139, UDP 137/138, TCP 135 + 445, dynamic TCP 49152–65535 |
| SNMP devices | UDP 161 |
| SSH (Linux/macOS) | TCP/UDP 22 |
| VMware vSphere | TCP/UDP 443 |
| Multi-user operation (LMC) | TCP 1433, UDP 1434 |
What authentication is required for scanning?
For Windows devices in a domain, an account with local admin rights on the target devices is enough (for example a domain admin). In workgroups, remote UAC must be disabled, and the scan account’s password can’t be blank. Alternatively, the logon script method allows scanning without admin rights. In that case, the scan account only needs write access to the data directory.
For VMware vCenter, an account with “read-only” permission is enough. SSH connections accept a password or a key file in OpenSSH format.
How do you try it out?
What’s the difference between the 30-day trial license and Forever-Free?
30-day trial license: full functionality at your actual network size, for 30 days. You fill out a form; sales gets back to you with a license key. Personal support is included during the trial. This is the right starting point if you’re evaluating LOGINventory for a production environment.
Forever-Free: up to 20 devices, free forever, with no time limit. Directly from the download page, with no registration and no sales contact. Suitable for pilot environments, labs, or a first look.
How long does the trial license run?
30 days, with the full feature set.
Do I need a credit card?
No. Neither the 30-day trial license nor Forever-Free requires a payment method.
What support do I get during the trial?
Personal support is included at no charge during the 30-day trial. The helpdesk and the interface are available in German and English.
What does that tell an auditor?
Is LOGINventory ISO 27001 certified?
Neither LOGINventory itself nor Schmidt’s LOGIN GmbH is certified to ISO 27001. LOGINventory does, however, include a template with relevant ISO 27001 controls that you can use for your ISMS documentation. The template must be filled in manually and isn’t connected to the database.
More on this under ISO 27001 & BSI IT-Grundschutz.
Does LOGINventory meet NIS2 requirements?
LOGINventory supports several areas that organizations subject to NIS2 must document: complete IT asset documentation, automated change detection, vulnerability monitoring, and compliance reports. The REST API enables integration into higher-level systems.
What LOGINventory doesn’t do: external threat analysis, incident response management, compliance consulting, or SIEM or SOC functions. LOGINventory isn’t a replacement for a complete NIS2 program, but it’s a verifiable foundation for the asset management part.
Details: NIS2 compliance.
Where is my inventory data stored?
Exclusively in your own SQL database, on your own infrastructure. No inventory data is transmitted to Schmidt’s LOGIN GmbH. The one exception: if you enable the AI assistant LIA, requests are processed through Azure OpenAI. With automatic anonymization. LIA can be fully disabled.
Is LOGINventory GDPR compliant?
LOGINventory includes a GDPR documentation folder with prepared queries on permissions, groups, and encryption. Software usage tracking (LOGINuse) is provided as a privacy-compliant solution.
How does vulnerability analysis with Cyber Insight work?
Cyber Insight is an independent third-party service (cyber-insight.de) with its own contract. Not part of LOGINventory. LOGINventory transmits inventory data to Cyber Insight via API; the analysis runs on servers in Germany; the CVE results are fed back into LOGINventory. Available from LOGINventory version 2025.2.
In practice: after rollout, 8,500 devices were analyzed in 2 hours a week instead of 30 hours.
What happens after you buy?
How often are updates released?
The current version is LOGINventory 2026.1.1 from April 17, 2026 (build 9.11.1 18713). Updates are released several times a year; there’s no publicly documented fixed release cycle. All updates during an active software maintenance term are included at no charge.
